April & May: What a fun couple of months at JH!
It's June already. ‘Where has almost half the year gone’ was my first thought when I sat down to write the highlights from April and May. We had a couple of really exciting months at JH - full of foodie fun, exciting workshops and a couple of trial runs - a completely new way of doing things out here. Here’s what kept us all wrapped up the past couple of months.
Healthy eating week
An ode to World Health Day on 7th April, we decided to dedicate a whole week to healthy eating with a Healthy Eating Week. Every day, a special menu was put together to incorporate foods that are fibrous, prebiotic or probiotic – all designed to help achieve better gut health! Needless to say, healthy menus are always well received by our diners and this one turned out to be quite popular too. Especially as people realised that just making minor changes to diets could help them become so much healthier.
We couldn't really observe Earth hour but decided to put together an earth friendly menu for lunch - ‘better burgers’ - more plant based, less but more sustainably sourced meats were on the menu. So the burgers for the day were: 100% grass fed beef & quinoa , Free range chicken, bulgur wheat & courgette and Sweet potato, black bean & amaranth!
Allergy Awareness Week - Free from menu
It was Allergy Awareness Week from 23rd April to 29th April. On one of the days, we put together a menu that was ‘Free From all 14 allergens’. The idea was to not only cater to those who suffer from allergies, but also to promote an understanding of the risks of food allergies and raise awareness.
Cinco de Mayo
For us, Cinco de Mayo is not the usual Corona - Tequilla fest, but more of an occasion to indulge in serious mexican grub. This year’s menu included tacos with a host of fillings - slow cooked lamb, achiote salmon and some incredible spiced prawns. All served with heaps of fun and Sombrero hats of course!
Star Wars Day
‘The force is strong with this one’ said he. And strong it was. Star Wars Day was celebrated all across JH with some yummy Star Wars Cookies and one of our teams went all out with a full themed menu - complete with Darth Vader fish n chips ( with squid ink batter) & Yoda Sodas! #MayTheFourthBeWithYou
National Vegetarian Week
In honor of National Vegetarian Week, we put together two days of plant based lunches with a Meatless Monday on one day and a Thali Thursday!
A Very British Feast
One of our clients’ teams was in town from the US and while we had more of the boring stuff like reviews and meetings to get on with, we wanted to squeeze in some fun time with them. With all of us being so into food, we thought why not invite them to a brilliant dinner showcasing some amazing British produce? ‘A Very British Feast’ was planned in our kitchen. We kicked off the evening with a ‘London Gin Bar’ curated by our in-house drinks specialist, Antonio (some of you know him better as Mr. @JustEatMyTweet) with gins made in London. And then the feast began. It featured Matt & Susi’s creative takes on some classic British dishes. Or just some incredible European bites made with brilliant British ingredients. To accompany this feast, we paired each course with English wines. Needless to say, a brilliant time was had by all.
One of the biggest dates in the UK (or even the world) social calendar this year, all our clients wanted to do something special for the Royal Wedding. Whether it was a high tea or themed cocktail evening, we had it all covered - even a ‘wedding cake’ was provided!
A bar with a range of plant-based foods – vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, and a whole range of tasty dressings – all to fit into a plant-based pot! Healthy and kind to the planet! What’s not to like right?
An all time favorite, pastas are a comfort food everywhere. And there’s no better joy than freshly tossed pastas. The selections on the day included - Black truffle tortelloni, porcini sauce, fresh truffle; Egg pappardelle, beef shin ragu, aged parmesan and Pumpkin & sage tortelloni w/ sage butter all served with a generous helping of grated parmesan, mmm...
Vietnamese summer rolls
Fresh crunchy vegetables, aromatic herbs, tasty meats - all wrapped in light and soft rice paper. Vietnamese summer rolls are an absolutely delicious and healthy snack. We ran a few DIY workshops to get people summer rollin’
Smoothie pop up
With all the beautiful berries and fruits in season, Giusy, our catering manager came up with a fun smoothie bar. For three mornings she had a themed smoothie pop up. Superboost - berry smoothies with hemp seeds, chia seeds; Super green - a BYO smoothie with a choice of base greens - kale, spinach, avocado and fruits, seeds and natural sweeteners like agave or pitted dates; and Super food - featuring peanut butter, dragonfruit or turmeric based smoothies. After all, isn’t it nice to be greeted with a freshly made smoothie when you come into work on a Monday morning isn't it?
In other news:
For the fourth year in a row, JH featured at #13 in The Caterer 30 Best Places to Work in Hospitality. As Sam Kennett, HR & Finance Director put it on her reflections from the day, it's amazing for us, a family run business to be pitched alongside some big corporate players. It just goes to show, that as dedicated as we are to increasing our clients’ workforce happiness, we are just as dedicated to increasing the happiness of our own teams!
